Ocean Science

From depth to dialogue

The ocean underpins all life on Earth. As well as hosting most of the world’s biodiversity, it regulates our climate, produces more than half the oxygen we breathe, and supports global food security. Yet it is under growing threat and remains critically underfunded in scientific research.

At Voice of the Ocean, we help close that gap. Our Open Science arm conducts continuous ocean monitoring in one of the world’s most polluted seas. We operate observatories that deliver real-time, open-access data to scientists worldwide, while interpreting what that data means for the ocean’s future – and ours.

Our Observations Portal

Our ocean observatories are out at sea, collecting a continuous stream of data and building a detailed long-term picture of conditions in the Baltic and North Sea. Explore the data in real time and find out where our autonomous platforms are now.

Eyes in the ocean: Our fleet

Our fleet of ocean monitoring platforms is made up of autonomous robots that travel above and below the waves. Discover how these vital tools work and how we deploy and guide them.

Ocean Tech

Ocean Tech

Ocean Tech is the VOTO department responsible for its key tools: the autonomous platforms and advanced sensors that give us our ability to “see” the ocean. From development to deployment, this is where we build and operate the systems that capture data.

Ocean Data

This is where what we see becomes knowledge. Ocean Data processes and distributes the raw information we collect, turning it into usable, shareable insight that supports research, informs decisions and helps us understand how the ocean is changing.
